Well, we survived our first week of Kindergarten and everyone transitioned very well so far. We practiced for a fire drill and lockdown and this week, we will have a student wide practice. We also participated in a school bus evacuation.   Here are few things happening this week:   In Literacy, we will be working on Word Awareness. This will be so much fun because we will learn that what we say is made up of so many individual words.  We will count the number of words in a sentence and read some poems in class.      *Homework will be sent home beginning this week. We have made some changes this year and the biggest one is changing the homework from weekly to monthly. We have included an information sheet, calendar and worksheets inside the black duotang in your child’s Book Buddy Bag. Included in the homework duotang is a reading log. Please read a book to your child every night. Soon, your child will be bringing home books to read to you. I have also included a yellow duotang for sight words. This duotang can remain at home. You will notice that we work on 2 sight words per week. Please review these with your child every day.     *On Tuesday, Sept. 9th, we will be having our Meet the Teacher night. This will take place in the school cafeteria, beginning at 6:00 pm. At this time, you will be able to meet me again, if you haven’t already done so and meet the rest of the Saint Andrew’s Elementary staff. Your child has different teachers for Phys. Ed. and Music. You will also have a chance to join the Home & School and/or the PSSC committees. Hope to see you there!   *If have not already done so, please return the following information sheets: Student Information Sheet, Permission to Publish, and Permission to leave school grounds. Also, please send in the $10 miscellaneous fee. Thank you for your cooperation.       *I will be sending home the Scholastic Book Order this week. This will be due back on September 18th.  Here are some of the benefits of ordering from Scholastic:    1. Welcome to a brand new school year!  I am very excited to begin a new and exciting year. Here a few things to keep in mind for the first day of school: * All Kindergarten students will go directly to their classroom on their first day of school.  This will be for the first day only and then they will wait outside on the playground until the 8:15 bell.  At 8:15, students will line up in their designated line.  * All other grades will wait outside on the playground on the first day of school.  All class lists will be posted on the wall of the school so students can see what class they are in.  If it is raining, all grades 1 & 2 students will meet in the cafeteria and all 3, 4, & 5 students will meet in the gym.  Their will be lots of staff around if you have any questions. * Please label your child's school supplies.  When you come into the classroom, there will be a bag at your child's seat to put their school supplies in.   * Please check my teacher page and the school's home page on a regular basis.  The parent/teacher handout and monthly calenders are posted on the home page.
