Dear Families,       We are beginning to work on numbers from 0 to 20.  Many children have difficulty with their teen numbers,  therefore any extra help you can give your child would be helpful to them.       Our learning goals for this part of the curriculum are: 1. Read and print numbers to 20.                   2. Count forward from 0 to 20 and count backwards from 20 to 0.                   3. Count by matching the numbers to the objects being counted (one to one matching).                   4. "Build: numbers by arranging and rearranging objects.                   5. Recognize familiar groups of objects or dots.                   6. Compare and order numbers and groups of objects using words such as more, fewer, and same.                   7. Estimate the number of objects and check by counting. If you have any questions regarding anything we are covering please call.

I would like to welcome my new grade one students to a new and fun year of Math and You and Your World.  Every week I will post our math homework on this page.  I will also post a summary of what we will be working on in Math as well as You and Your World.   Math - we are reviewing numbers from 0 to 10.  Looking at recognizing the number, sets and the number word.  We will soon be moving onto numbers to 20.  It is important for your child to be able to count to 20, beginning with 0, and to be able to create sets of these numbers. You and Your World - we began the year looking at Health.  What keeps us healthy, such as food and excercise.  We will also be looking at safety as part of this unit. If you have any questions in regards to what we are covering or homework please contact me at 778-6081.

Dear Parents:                                     In this unit, your child will be learning about measurement.                                  The learning Goals for this unit are: ·        Make comparisons between objects (longer, taller). ·        Order lengths of objects (shortest to longest). ·        Compare the areas of objects by covering them with different materials. ·        Practise the language of measurement using words such as longer/shorter, as tall as, more/less, heavier/lighter. ·        Compare the capacities of containers by filling them with water and other materials. ·        Compare the masses of objects using simple scales and balances. You can help you child reach these goals by helping them with their homework and talking about their day.

Dear Parents;   MATH          Students need to know a number of different strategies                                               to add or subtract.        Addition Strategies       1.     Simply know the number fact.     2.      Count on -   For example, 8+4=  your child begins at 8 so all they have to do is count on four                                     – 9, 10, 11, 12.     3.     Double Facts -   For example, a question of 5+6= is given.  If they knew 5+5= 10, then they                                        know 6 is 1 more than 5 just add the 1 to the 10.   Subtraction Strategies 1.     Simply knowing the facts. 2.     Counting backwards – For example, 5-2= your child begins at 5 and counts backwards 4, 3. 3.     Knowing addition facts – Knowing 2+3=5 will help to know subtraction is a reconfiguration                                                       of addition facts, such as, 5-2=3 or 5-3=2.   Working with facts repeatedly will help students remember them like memorization.  Knowing the strategies will help them figure out unknown facts.

We have begun to explore the concept of addition.  It has been explained to the students addition is placing two groups together.    Tip: While in the car or on a walk ask you child addition questions up to the sum of 10 for now.
