Welcome back for another week!  We drew countries for each class to follow during the winter Olympics and we got NORWAY!  We will be making flags and preparing for the opening ceremonies on Friday. This week in: French: We continue with Daily 5 (Reading independently, with a partner, with the teacher, working on writing and spelling & listening to stories.)  We work on various reading strategies every week, so daily reading at home in a must! Social Studies:  We will be looking at our neighborhoods and how far away we live from the school.  We will look at maps and use Google Maps Street View to take a look around and get an idea of some distances we travel every day. Math: We are finishing up our addition and subtraction unit.  It seems like we have been on this unit forever because we started it before the Christmas break and don’t move on until we really have a good understanding.  We are getting there and by the end of the week I should have idea of when the unit test will be.  Practice makes perfect, so there will be questions Tuesday and Thursday this week.  Do your best! Estimate, choose a strategy, calculate, and check your answer with your estimation. * I will try to scan an example question for the new strategy tonight or tomorrow for parents (as I know the ‘new’ math can be confusing at times) Here’s to a great week!

It is already the end of January and we have had 88 days of classes!  Time sure does fly! This week in French, we are discussing the four seasons and the activities we like to do in each.  (Last week some students asked if they could bring in a photograph of them participating in their passtime, in order to complete their page in our class book "Les passe-temps de 3C".  These are due Wednesday. As always we are continuing with Daily 5.  We use the pictures in a book, the context (what it's about), the letters/sound chunks/familiar words inside more difficult words, and making connections to always do our best reading. This weeks spelling words are: hiver, quand, arbre, neige, fleurs, chaud, saison. This week in Math classes, we are estimating differences, subtracting 2 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers & looking at using mental math strategies to help wih subtraction questions.  As always, we will practice our math facts up to 9+9=18 with a practice quiz next week. For the next few weeks we will begin to discuss healthy habits for life in health class. (physical activity, four food groups, getting enough sleep, etc.)Homework: Math sheets Tuesday and Thursday this week.  Reading each night, and don't forget to record the title of the book on your log sheet.  If you're child needs an extra log sheet, tell them to let me know or jot a note in their agenda.* Friday is electronic day (see note below)*Don't forget to bring super healthy recess snacks for our Mango Mania challenge!

Tonight's math sheet is a review of the relationship between addition and subtraction.  We went over this in class today.  Fill in the missing number for all questions.  Number 1 requires a picture to represent the equations as well.  Numbers 3 & the extra on the bottom are bonus questions.  Have a great night and weekend!!Mme Comeau

This week in math we will be finishing up some addition strategies for adding 2 and 3 digit numbers, as well as starting to look at estimating differences (subtraction questions.)  We are always practicing skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s & 25s to 1000, as well as our addition/subtraction facts.  There will be a math sheet Wedneday and Thursday this week to review addition strategies to date.In French class we are just finishing up discussing our passtimes (Who we do them with, where, when and what we wear during our favorite passtimes.)  We have also started to discuss the four seasons and all that goes along with them, starting with winter.  On parle beaucoup de français, c'est magnifique!  Reading each night for homework.  No spelling list this week.

This week in math:      We have been estimating sums and learning several strategies for adding 2 digit numbers.  We will be soon moving on to adding 3 digit numbers and are always reviewing and practicing our addition/subtraction facts (and the mental math strategies that go along with them.)  Math homework this week will be on Wed. & Thurs. evenings but practicing math facts is always a good idea!)This week for literacy (French):     We are continuing to discuss our passtimes & the details that go along with it (i.e.: Where? with whom? when? & why? what do they wear/equipment, etc.)  We are always working on reading and writing pieces of work that are linked to our discussions.  Students also received a new list of spelling words for the week (which they practice each day).Homework: Reading daily, math Wed. & Thurs., practice spelling words and math facts up to 9+9=18 as much as you can!Have a great week!

For the homework tonight students need to answer the questions, show me their mental math strategies for addition. (Using doubles and making 10)They each copied down the sentence that will help them explain their work.Example: 4 + 5 (Using doubles) Je sais que 4 + 4 = 8 alors, 4 + 5 = 9. (I know that 4 + 4 = 8, so 4 + 5 must be 9.) 9 + 3 (Using make 10)Je sais que  9 + 1 = 10  alors,  9 + 3 = 12.
