Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful week end. Here are a few things that are going on in room 221! This morning we went book shopping around the room to trade in our picture books for our book boxes. Then we traded our read the word books. Everyone is doing excellent work during daily five! We are up to 12 minutes of uninterrupted reading and continue each day to build our stamina! Well done kids! We now have many strategies up on our CAFÉ menu to help us become better readers. This week we are working on reading with expression which helps us with our fluency and asking ourselves questions as we read. This helps us with our comprehension. Tell someone at home what comprehension means!             The students are coming along in their writing quite nicely. Many come to school each day with a topic in their pocket! We have been learning about adjectives and how they help make our stories more interesting because they are describing words! The students are now able to see how well they are doing with their writing by checking at the back of our room to see if their writing matches the sample of a good writer. Writer’s get a thumbs up to: using finger spaces between their words, having a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence and using punctuation at the end of sentences, using the word wall and stretching out sounds of unknown words! We have already been in school for 42 days! That was our number of the day today! Was that number even or odd boys and girls? How did you know? In grade 1 we are learning how to use a ten frame to find out our pairs that make ten. Also, we are learning how to use a number line to help us with our addition sentences and number stories! We also continue to practice our skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.The grades 2’s are looking at number lines too! They are really working hard at skip counting with different starting points. It can get tricky! As you can see we are working really hard here in room 221! I hope everyone has an excellent sleep tonight and comes to school ready to listen and learn!

Good afternoon! We had a great day in room 221 today! We started off by learning a new reading strategy called Backup and Reread the text. Ms. Gallant had to back up and reread parts of the Paper Bag Princess so that she could understand what she was reading. Taylor said if you are confused and do not back up and reread you will not know what the book is about! Well done Taylor, that is exactly what this strategy is all about! The class is building their stamina during read to self. Today the class read for 7 minutes without interruption! That certainly filled my bucket! In Math the grade twos worked on skip counting double digit numbers and also solved problems by reading a sandwich pictograph! After lunch we watched a short video about communities. What is a community boys and girls? (A place where people live and work together).  The grade two children are getting the hang of writing in their agendas each day. It is tricky copying notes from the SMART Board into their books but, I am proud that they are trying their best! There were 3 Scholastic book order forms that went home today. The due date for them to be returned is October 10. I hope you all have a lovely evening! The sun is shining so go out and enjoy it while you can!

Bonjour Everyone! Girls and boys in room 221 received their writing folders yesterday in Language Arts. There are two sections to their folders. One side has a green sticker and the other side has a red sticker. What do the colors stand for boys and girls? They remind me of traffic lights. Hmmm? Let your parents know! We are continuing to build our stamina during Read to Self and have worked our way up to five minutes of non-stop reading! The first round was really well done today! We have traded our books so that really makes it more interesting to read! In Math the grade two’s were working with the one hundred chart and they were also reading and interpreting a nickel pictograph!   What did you learn today grade 2? Over on the grade 1 side we were working with ten frames and learning how to grab a number, put it in our head, and count on! Holy, that was hard, but we did it!! What else did you learn in Math today grade 1? Oh yes! We used the ten frames to show one more, one less, two more and two less with a number of our choice between 2 and 8. What was your number? After lunch we had Music and Phys. Ed and then it we finished our day with a SMART Board Math game! Parents, there are some early dismissal information sheets that went home today along with some other notices. Please make sure to sign and return these as soon as you can :O) ! Have a great night and I will see all my little learners in the morning!!

Holy Moly the week certainly flew by! We are really becoming better at getting into the classroom and starting our morning routines! Homework duo tangs were passed in today along with our borrowed books! Thanks you! In Language Arts the children are building their stamina during Daily Five! Today they read for 4 ½ minutes today without interruption! Well done B&G’s! It was also Fluency Friday today. This is the day that we read to a partner, the books we took home all week. Then, some of the children read their books to the class. Mrs. Comeau and I were really fascinated with the fabulous fluent readers!! In Math it was game day!! The children were quite excited to learn how to play poison pill! Can you teach your parents how to play boys and girls? You have to strategize in order to win! This afternoon we had music and then we made owls out of torn up paper in art! You can check them out in our image gallery! I think it is going to be a lovely week end everyone so get outside and be sure to bring a topic in your pocket for Monday!!!

Here are our Word Wall Words for this week: at has it see when

Posted: September 9, 2014

Hi everyone! It was another great day here at St. Andrew’s! This morning we had Language Arts and the time flew by. We were busy bees! Ms. Gallant read another story by Kevin Henkes, Wemberly Worried. What did she worry about? There were many feeling words in this book. Do you remember any? Mrs. Comeau got us up and ready to go with the IPICK song! It really gets us energized and ready to learn. I even heard some children singing as they left school this afternoon. In Math we are continuing to work and numbers and the grade 2’s gathered more information for a new graph they are getting ready to create. Mrs. Robinson had a really cool experiment over at the grade 2 table and the children were making predictions as to what would happen to object when it was dropped in the water. Did it float or sink grade 2? We also had a lock down today and the children were absolutely awesome!! There was a notice that went home tonight in regards to the lockdown for parents to look through! Please check your child’s homework folder each night for any notices or forms that you may need to read or fill out! I hope everyone has a nice night, a great sleep, and I will see you in the morning!

Good morning everyone! We launched our reading groups yesterday, picked our own short stories for our reading boxes, and practiced the first part of our reading program, Daily Five. Do you remember what it was called girls and boys? (Read to Self).  Mrs. Comeau taught us a really groovy song to help us pick our books!! Were you singing it to your family last night? I was practicing at the supper table with my family! They thought it was pretty good J ! We also put up five sight words on our word wall and made up a song for them too! Boy oh boy does Mrs. Comeau like to sing! It makes things so much more fun to learn!! In grade 1 Math class, we modeled our number of the day in different ways, continued to practice counting to 20, making different groups with a given number, and explored different ways to make patterns with snap cubes and found the part that repeats! The grade two’s learned how to gather information about themselves and others to answer questions. They are learning how to create graphs with Mrs. Robinson! Do you remember the names of the graph’s you will be creating grade 2? (Pictographs and concrete graphs) In You and Your World Ms. Gallant went over our bus safety rules and we wrote down one rule that we remembered and then began to color our buses, then it was off to the gym for Phys. Ed. ! What did you do in there yesterday boys and girls? This evening we will have our open house. This is where everyone will have a chance to meet the other teachers at St. Andrew’s and ask any questions you may have! I hope to see you all there! Have a great day!!

Hello everyone! We had a great day today! We started off our day with a story by…you guessed it, Roberto Munsch! Do you remember the name of the book boys and girls? It sure was hilarious! Later, we had our first writer’s workshop. We discussed the importance of having a good topic to write about before we write and brainstormed many different topics that we were interested in. Then, the children went back to their desks and put their pencils to work! I was really impressed with many of the stories when we had a chance to share at the end of our class! After recess we had Math. It was a surprise to find out that we were playing Math Bingo! Mrs. Robinson called out the numbers in a different way to challenge us! Instead of just saying the number what did she do? When our lunch hour was over we had an assembly in the gym and the teachers put on a crazy play by the same book that we read in class this morning! Girls and boys, do you think Ms. Gallant was just studying her lines for the play? There was not much time left for Art class today so instead of painting we doodled a clown step by step! The children did an excellent job! Be sure to check their book bags to see your artist’s amazing work! Have a great week end boys and girls. I will see you on Monday!

We had a very busy day today! First, in Language Arts, we read Class Clown by Robert Munsch. I think we all agreed that he is one of our favorite authors. Do you remember what Leonardo grew up to be at the end of the book? We are also starting to build our stamina during read to self. Today we read for two minutes without any interruptions! Bravo boys and girls! The students and I also had the opportunity to practice our bus evacuation today. This is really important even if you do not take the bus on a regular basis because we do go on the bus from time to time with our school for field trips or for skating in the winter. We were all very respectful and listened to the bus driver as he explained what to do in case of an emergency. Do you remember how many emergency exits there are on the bus? Wow our school routines are already going much smoother! We talked as a class, about the importance of having a few rules in our class so that it will run much smoother! What are the five rules that Ms. Gallant wrote on the chart paper? Show and tell your parents the actions of our five rules! It will make your dear teacher happy! In Math class today we did some activities with numbers! Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Gallant both taught our class! The children even helped write the outcome for today's lesson! They were amazing! Can you tell your parents what we did today in Math? Well, tomorrow we have Art and I think paint may be involved! This should be fun! I hope you all have a nice sleep tonight and are ready for tomorrow! We are off to a great start here in room 221!
