Dear Parents and Guardians,                                                                September 2015    We would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child into our grade one classroom.  The following is an outline of what to expect in our class.  Most homework will be assigned on Monday we ask that it be returned on Friday.   In your child’s homework bag you will find a reading log which requires a parents or guardian’s signature each night.  Students also have a Notice folder which should be checked nightly for important information from the school.  Any notes coming back to school should come in this folder as it is checked daily. Literacy: ·         Students are expected to read 10 minutes per night.  The books they read will be at their reading level.  Record their readings! ·         The choice of reading material is usually up to the student.  Our classroom has a large collection of books from which to choose from.    Students are also allowed to sign out 1 book from the library on Thursday. Students who forget to return their library book are not permitted to sign out another book until that one is returned.    ·         If your child is reading a book at home and it appears to be too difficult, please return it so that they can be given a better ‘fit’ book. Math: Math homework is given to support and review what has been covered in class and will be given weekly. This homework should not take more than 5 minutes. Other things to note: Homework is usually not assigned on the weekends.  Please keep us informed about different traveling arrangements (i.e. if you are picking up your child from school, etc.).  Just send note! If your child misses a day of school, a written excuse is required. Please review your child’s homework each night and initial. In grade one, your child should be spending about 10-15 minutes per evening on homework. Please feel free to contact us at school with any questions or concerns. Physical Education classes are Monday to Thursday (indoor shoes required). Music Classes are Thursday and Friday. Library is on Thursday (don’t forget your book). I know we are going to have a great year! Mr. Williston and Mrs. Donnelly
