A Letter From Laurie Keoghan

Dear Parents:A problem with odour in two classrooms and both washrooms on the first floor of the wing running parallel to Frost Street was brought to our attention last week. A decision was made at that time to close the floor and seal it off. The Department of Supply and Services was requested to send a specialist to view the situation and give direction on how to rectify the issue. The remediation company engaged opened up some of the wall spaces and have found characteristics that exhibit the possibility of mold. Results for the testing of mold take up to 14 days. In order not to waste valuable time, they have treated the situation as though mold was present. All areas that have been opened up have been sprayed with a solvent that kills and disinfects mold on contact. The areas in question have been sealed off and negative air filtration systems have been installed in each room. These systems take the air out of the room, clean it through a filtration process and then move the air outdoors. The remediation company has completed its work. It has identified the cause of the problem as water leaking in around the windows and condensation/pooling around steel beams which have, over time, caused rotting of wooden boards. We have been given the go ahead to continue using the second floor of this wing. However the ground floor will remain closed. We are in discussion with the Department of Education and will share concrete plans and timelines for repair with you when we have those. In the interim, school staff has put into motion plans to accommodate the displaced classes. As always, the well being and learning of your children are primary considerations.Yours truly, Lawrence KeoghanSuperintendentSchool District 16Tel: (506) 778-6075Fax: (506) 778-6090
