May 20 - 23

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!  We had a couple nice days. This morning students went to JMH to see the musical SHREK.  It was a great performance and most really enjoyed it!  (A few students found it 'loud' and 'freaky' during the darker parts but overall it was awesome and the students were well behaved! French - This week, students will be getting science themed spelling words and the quiz will only be next week.  I will post the list of words tomorrow.  As always, we continue to work on reading strategies; decoding, fluency and comprehension.  Most are finishing up good copies of their procedural pieces and some have begun their final written piece - a creative narrative.  (The more imagination the better, but with a warning of simplified language so they can plan, write and edit it themselves.)Math - This week students will finish up the measurement unit with mass, exploring kilograms and grams.  The unit test will be next week (Tuesday likely.)  Then we will finish up with geometry. Science - We have planted our tomato seeds and we are discussing the things plants need to grow, how they grow and the parts of a plant.  We will also discuss the scientifique process as we go through the steps with our project helping TOMATOSPHERE out with seeds that have gone to space. With only a short time before summer break, students must make sure they are speaking French at all times in the classroom (if not making the effort, they will be sent to the responsibility room, as this is breaking a class rule.)  It is also very important that students read each night and think about what they are reading (if they are understanding it).  The sound books they have been reading each night serve as a great review of each of the sounds we have explored this year.  A math review went home tonight to review the unit to date.  This was fully explained a couple of times in class.  (The only question that might be forgotten is # 3 b) the time it takes a pine needle to grow into a 3m tall tree.)Have a great week!
