I welcome all of you to the beginning of a new school year at Saint Andrew’s Elementary. I look forward to getting to know my students and their families. In order to avoid any initial concerns that you may have, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify some matters.
Homework will be given on a daily basis to provide reinforcement and to develop learning beyond the classroom. This will include weekly spelling words. Some additional language arts like (reading and writing) and mathematical work will be part of the daily assignments. Occasionally students will also work on Science or Social Studies projects at home.
Homework should last no longer than 40-50 minutes. If you feel that your child encounters problems with his/her homework, I encourage you to speak with me before or after school. You can also call our school secretary, if you wish to make an appointment with me.
I encourage the children to read at school and at home. We will have read to self, guided reading or literature session most days in class. Your child will have a reading log he/she should use to write down the books she/he is reading. I will use the reading record to monitor the level of the children’s reading and the choices they are making.
In Grade 4 students will have Physical Education classes three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Please ensure that your child takes his/her gym clothes to school during these days.
Settling into a new class and for some a new school can be an exciting and occasionally a worrisome time for children and parents alike. Last week the students seem to have a great week. I am looking forward to this school you getting to know your children.
Thanks
Ms.Kane
